My story

I woke up one day with an image and idea and quickly jotted it down. I couldn’t shake it, and it stuck with me for weeks.

I lost my mother—my best friend—in December shortly before Christmas. She was amazing—a true giver with a smile and a presence that could light up a room and the lives of anyone she encountered.

I realized that holidays would never be the same again, especially Mother’s Day. I would not be showering her with love and as it’s not my day to receive as I don’t have children. I thought of my friends who had also lost their mother unexpectedly in the last year. We are all Motherless. Childless. Grieving. Missing someone. Deserving love.

Rather than make it a sad thing I thought instead how could I reframe this to be positive—to give back to others. What if there was a way to offer support, an opportunity to share positivity, a way to exercise my design skills and creativity?

What if this idea could spread like a smile and light faces up in our communities? Let’s acknowledge a demographic that can be overlooked. Let’s remember our mothers and do what we can to honor their memories. And let’s continue to spread joy to others because that joy comes back tenfold.

“By the way I’m wearing that smile you gave me”
